18K gold price, live
18K gold, marked 750 under the European hallmark system, contains 75% pure gold. Its value per gram is simply 75% of the live 24K price.
The 18K price formula
24K gold price per gram × 0.75 = theoretical 18K value per gram, shown here in both euros and US dollars. Multiply that figure by the weight of your piece in grams, excluding stones and non-gold parts, to get the melt value.
750 and 18K are simply two ways of describing the same alloy — 750 out of 1,000 parts pure gold. If you see a 750 stamp on a piece, it's 18K.
Calculate your gramsWhat a fair offer looks like
A gold buyer starts from this theoretical value and keeps a margin to cover refining, testing and risk. An offer between 70% and 90% of the theoretical value is generally considered fair for 18K gold.
Always get two or three quotes before selling, and ask each buyer what percentage of the theoretical melt value their offer represents — reputable buyers will tell you.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate the price of 18K gold per gram?
- Take the price of pure 24K gold per gram and multiply it by 0.75. For example, if pure gold is worth $122/g, 18K gold has a theoretical value of about $91.50/g.
- Why does a gold buyer offer less than the theoretical value?
- The theoretical value is the value of the pure gold content alone; the buyer keeps a margin for refining, testing and risk. An offer between 80% and 90% of theoretical value is considered good.
- What's the difference between 750 and 18K?
- None — they describe the same alloy, with 750 referring to 750 parts per thousand of pure gold. A 750 hallmark on a piece confirms it is 18 karat gold.
- Does the 18K gold price change every day?
- Yes, it changes continuously with the international gold market and the EUR/USD exchange rate. The figure on this page is always current.
