How today's scrap gold price is set

Scrap and used gold are valued exactly like new gold: the price tracks the live spot rate for pure gold, expressed in dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g) and converted into euros and dollars per gram at the current exchange rate.

The only extra factor for scrap gold is purity. An 18K piece is worth 75% of the 24K price per gram, a 14K piece 58.5%, and a 9K piece 37.5%. European hallmarks 750, 585 and 375 tell you exactly which multiplier applies.

What buyers pay for used gold

A specialist gold buyer typically pays 70-90% of the melt value shown here, since it needs to cover refining costs, testing and its own margin. Jewelers buying scrap tend to offer 60-85%.

Used gold isn't worth less as metal than new gold of the same purity — it's simply that new jewelry's retail price also includes manufacturing and brand markup that scrap doesn't recover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the scrap gold price today?
It's the live 24K gold spot price converted to euros and US dollars per gram, shown at the top of this page. For 18K scrap gold, multiply that figure by 0.75.
How much will a gold buyer pay me for scrap gold?
Typically between 70% and 90% of the theoretical melt value of the metal it contains. The rest covers the buyer's refining costs and margin.
Is old gold worth less than new gold?
Not as metal — a gram of 18K scrap gold contains exactly the same amount of gold as a gram of new 18K jewelry. Only the retail price differs, because new pieces also include manufacturing and design costs.
How often does the scrap gold price change?
Continuously, in line with the global gold market and the EUR/USD exchange rate. This page refreshes the figure throughout every trading day.
